THE GENDER PAY GAP
The Story

Although London is one of the most diverse cities in the UK, its gender pay gap is the largest in the country, with women earning, on average, 30.4% less than men.
This is equal to women earning £8,303 less than their male counterparts or working 71 days with no pay at all.
The Gender Pay Gap: About
The gender pay gap in the entirety of the UK stands at 17.3%, or 8.9% for full time employees.
An example of a company with a large gender pay gap is easyJet, with women’s median hourly pay rate 45.5% lower than men’s, although this can be seen due to the 5% of female pilots working with easyJet, compared to the 95% of men.
However, easyJet says men and women are paid equally, when this is clearly not the case, whether there is a valid reason or not.
Jeremy Vine of the BBC had said he was “appalled” by the BBC gender pay gap. While he was earning over £700,000, Claudia Winkelman, host of the popular TV show Strictly Come Dancing, was earning less than £500,000.
The gender pay gap has now been addressed by the BBC, and 3 female presenters are now in the top 10 for BBC star salaries.
The Gender Pay Gap: Text
The gender pay gap needs to be addressed in the whole of the UK, not just the BBC. Females are being paid less while still doing the same work as their male co-workers. Although the gap is steadily closing, we have a long way to go before equal pay in all areas of work.
